Options for Internet, Cell Phones and TV in Graz

Getting hooked up to the internet, phone and TV is one of the first things you'll need to do when you arrive in Graz. The good news is, there are many providers that offer very competitive prices and lots of special deals. The bad news is, so many providers can lead to a lot of confusion.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind about Internet, phone and TV use in Austria:

  • WIFI (WLAN, pronounced "VAY-Lahn"), is not as widespread in Austria as it might be in your home country. If you are planning to use your laptop while out and about a lot, consider getting an internet USB stick (mobiles Internet) that you can take with you anywhere.
  • If you have a television or radio, you are required to register it at GIS Gebühren Informationen Service GmbH (https://www.gis.at/sprachmenu/english/). Each household pays a fee (the fees vary according to province - currently in Styria the fee is 25,18 EUR per month, and can be paid monthly, semiannually or annually).
  • You usually need a residence registration form (Meldezettel) as well as some kind of photo I.D. to sign up for an internet or phone plan. Be sure to bring these documents with you!
