When you're preparing for a baby, there are lists and lists of things to buy - though it may not all be necessary, you'll likely still find yourself spending plenty of money on your little one. In a new country, the options may be bewildering - you don't know where to go, or what brands to trust, or what normal prices are. Here is a short guide to some of the shopping options for babies in Graz.
First of all, if you want to save money you should start online. There are several Facebook groups dedicated to selling and giving away the mountains of baby gear that pile up in our apartments. Try Share & Care-Baby & Kind Steiermark for free items.
For better searching and a wider selection, go to willhaben.at, an online flea market boasting plenty of used strollers, car seats, and other baby necessities. It is searchable by location, item, price, etc.
Waldis Laden has an enormous selection of used clothing, sports gear, and toys - if you can wade through the offerings. Most of the gear is for older children, but it is especially great for winter clothing and boots as well as baby toys. Schörgelgasse 8, 8010 Graz (near Dietrichsteinplatz)
Mayla Second-Hand also has exclusively children's items - more clothing, toys, and strollers and less sports gear than Waldi's. Volksgartenstraße 7, 8020 Graz
Popolini is a great place to go for gifts - in other words, to spend a lot of money on high-quality items that will make you feel like a good parent (or friend). They have organic wool snowsuits, plastic-free bottles and cloth diapers. (If you're considering cloth diapers, be sure to inquire about the trial package - you get several kinds to try out for several Euros a week before you have to commit.) Neutorgasse 33, 8010 Graz
Kastner & Öhler has clothing and toys, plus a moderate book, music and DVD collection. However, I would skip the shopping and head straight to the fabulous restrooms with comfortable changing and nursing areas. Sackstraße 7-13, 8010 Graz
BabyWalz, which also has an online shop, is the place to go for strollers, car seats, high chairs and other large items. It has some great deals online - we found our Stokke high chair to be cheapest from their online shop. Murpark, Ostbahnstraße 3, 8041 Graz
IKEA is a no-brainer for furniture, but they also have child-proof locks, outlet covers, baby gates, and other safety devices, as well as the best bibs, in my humble opinion.
